Gas Safety Checklist: Protecting Your Melbourne Home
By Joel - Licensed Plumber, Hobsons Bay Plumbing
Natural gas powers many Melbourne homes - heating, hot water, cooktops, and more. While it's safe when properly installed and maintained, gas leaks and faulty appliances can be dangerous. Use this checklist to keep your home safe.
Signs of a Gas Leak
If you notice any of these signs, act immediately:
- Smell: A distinctive "rotten egg" odour (mercaptan is added to natural gas for detection)
- Sound: A hissing or whistling near a gas line or appliance
- Sight: Dead vegetation near a gas line, bubbles in standing water, or a white cloud/fog near a pipe
- Physical symptoms: Dizziness, headaches, nausea, or breathing difficulties can indicate a leak or carbon monoxide exposure
What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak
- Do NOT turn on/off any electrical switches, lights, or appliances
- Do NOT use your phone inside the house
- Open doors and windows to ventilate
- Turn off the gas meter at the main valve (if safe to do so)
- Leave the property and call the gas emergency line: 132 771
- Call a licensed gas fitter for repairs once the area is safe
Your Annual Gas Safety Checklist
We recommend checking these items at least once a year:
Gas Appliances
- ✅ All gas appliances have adequate ventilation
- ✅ Pilot lights burn with a clean blue flame (yellow/orange flames indicate incomplete combustion)
- ✅ No soot or staining around appliance vents
- ✅ Gas heaters have been serviced before winter
Gas Hot Water System
- ✅ No gas smell around the unit
- ✅ Flue (exhaust) is clear and properly connected
- ✅ TPR valve is not continuously dripping
- ✅ Unit is accessible (not blocked by storage)
Gas Connections
- ✅ Flexible gas hoses (bayonet connections for heaters) are not cracked or perished
- ✅ Gas cooktop connections are secure
- ✅ Outdoor BBQ gas lines are in good condition
Rental Properties & Compliance
Victorian landlords are required to ensure all gas appliances are safe. A gas safety inspection by a licensed gas fitter should be conducted every two years (at minimum). We provide Type A gas appliance compliance certificates for property managers and landlords.
