How to Fix a Dripping Tap (And When to Call a Plumber)

By Joel - Licensed Plumber, Hobsons Bay Plumbing

That steady drip-drip-drip from your kitchen or bathroom tap isn't just annoying - it's costing you money. A single dripping tap can waste up to 20,000 litres of water per year, adding hundreds of dollars to your water bill.

    What Causes a Dripping Tap?

Most dripping taps are caused by worn-out internal components. The specific cause depends on the type of tap:

    • Washer taps (traditional): The rubber washer inside the tap body wears down over time, allowing water to seep past when the tap is turned off.
    • Ceramic disc taps (quarter-turn): The ceramic cartridge can crack or accumulate mineral deposits, preventing a proper seal.
    • Mixer taps: Internal O-rings or cartridges degrade, causing drips from the spout or base.

    Simple DIY Fixes

If you're handy, you can try these basic steps:

    • Turn off the water supply at the isolation valve beneath the tap or at the mains.
    • Remove the tap handle - usually held by a small screw under a decorative cap.
    • Replace the washer or cartridge - take the old one to your local hardware store to find the right match.
    • Reassemble and test - turn the water back on slowly and check for leaks.

When to Call a Licensed Plumber

    Call a professional if:

    • The tap continues dripping after replacing the washer
    • The tap seat (the brass fitting the washer presses against) is damaged or scored
    • You have a mixer tap - these require specific cartridges and careful disassembly
    • You notice water damage to the cabinet or wall behind the tap
    • The tap is old and corroded - it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire tap with a modern, water-efficient model

    Upgrading to WELS-Rated Taps

If your taps are more than 10 years old, consider upgrading to WELS-rated (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) taps. A 4-star WELS tap uses up to 50% less water than older models - saving water and money without sacrificing pressure.
