5 Signs You Need a New Hot Water System

By Joel - Licensed Plumber, Hobsons Bay Plumbing

Your hot water system works hard every day - showers, dishes, laundry. Most systems last 8–15 years, but many homeowners don't realise theirs is failing until they're standing in a cold shower. Here are five warning signs to watch for.

    1. Your Hot Water Runs Out Faster Than It Used To

If your household hasn't grown but hot water doesn't last through the morning showers, sediment buildup in the tank is likely reducing its effective capacity. Flushing the tank can help temporarily, but if the system is over 10 years old, replacement is usually the smarter investment.

    2. Strange Noises - Banging, Popping, or Rumbling

These sounds are caused by mineral deposits hardening on the heating element or the bottom of the tank. The system has to work harder to heat water, increasing your energy bills and accelerating wear.

    3. Rusty or Discoloured Water

Brown or rusty hot water (but clear cold water) usually means the anode rod has corroded and the tank itself is starting to rust internally. Once the tank is rusting, replacement is the only safe option - repairs won't fix internal corrosion.

    4. Visible Leaking or Pooling Water

Any water pooling around your hot water unit is a red flag. Small leaks from the temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve can sometimes be fixed, but tank leaks mean the unit has reached end of life. Don't ignore leaks - they can cause significant water damage to your home.

    5. Your Energy Bills Are Climbing

An old, inefficient hot water system can account for up to 25% of your home's energy costs. If your bills are rising without an obvious cause, your hot water system may be working overtime to compensate for failing components.

    What Are Your Replacement Options?

Modern systems are significantly more efficient. Your main options include:

    • Gas storage: Reliable and cost-effective for most Melbourne homes
    • Electric storage: Good for off-peak tariff setups
    • Continuous flow (instant): Endless hot water, compact footprint
    • Heat pump: Most energy-efficient option - eligible for government rebates of up to $1,000
