Standard call-out fees
Most Melbourne plumbers charge a call-out fee just to knock on the door, usually $80-$150. At Hobsons Bay Plumbing we run a $0 call-out for general jobs (hot water, taps, toilets, gas) - you only pay for the work quoted. The one exception is blocked drains, which carry an $88 dispatch and diagnostic fee to cover the camera and jetter that come out on every job.
Common job pricing
- Blocked drain (jetted + camera): from $350, fixed price after diagnosis
- Burst pipe repair: $280-$650 depending on access and pipe size
- Tap or mixer replacement: $180-$320 supplied and fitted
- Toilet suite replacement: $650-$1,200 supplied and fitted
- Gas leak detection: from $220 with compliance certificate on repair
- Hot water unit replacement (gas storage): $2,200-$3,400 fully installed
- Heat pump hot water install: $3,900-$5,500 after rebates
Emergency after-hours pricing
We don't apply surge pricing. Emergency response is priced the same as day-time - the difference is availability, not cost. Compare that with hourly-rate operators who tack on 50-100% after 5pm and weekends.
Why fixed pricing is safer than hourly rates
An hourly rate quote of "$95 + GST per hour" sounds cheap until the job takes 6 hours plus $400 of parts. Fixed pricing puts the risk on the plumber, not you. We assess the job in person, write a total price, and stick to it. If it's more complex than expected, that's on us.
How to get a real price for your job
Every job is different - pipe age, access, materials and compliance drive real cost. Call us with a description and a photo if possible, and we'll give you a range on the phone and a written quote on site.
